This publication is meant to guide you through the process of setting up your elementary and middle school classroom. From taking an initial room inventory to designing bulletin boards, this guide will provide you with proven procedures and techniques that I, as well as my colleagues have used in our classrooms. At this moment, you are probably asking yourself, “What gives her the expertise to assist me in setting up my classroom?” Good question! I have been an elementary teacher for seven years, not including 2 years of substitute teaching while working toward my Masters in Reading. During my teaching career, I always searched for the best techniques to enhance my instruction. I teamed up with my colleagues to share effective techniques that we have designed, implemented and refined throughout our teaching careers. Furthermore, I have been a school administrator for over nine years. During my administrative tenure, I have presented workshops to my teachers and have assisted my new teachers in setting up their classrooms. I am truly passionate about supporting teachers in designing an instructional environment composed of procedures, routines and systems that maximize the learning experience for the leaders of tomorrow.
This Book’s Design:
This book is designed to be teacher-friendly. Whether you are a new or “veteran” teacher, this publication is meant to provide you with proven strategies that span the classroom management spectrum. Each section is devoted to giving you a comprehensive list of strategies and techniques in order for you to find the one that best matches your teaching style and educational setting, as well as the needs of your learners. For the global learners reading this book, I have labeled the sections within the chapters to establish the key concepts. For the analytical learners, I have listed a short summary at the end of each chapter that consists of key points. Some chapters contain a convenient checklist to assist you in your classroom management endeavor. Finally, for you visual learners, I have decided to maintain the apple theme throughout by establishing chapters that relate to the different aspects of an apple:
1. The “Seeds” of Your Sanity: Taking Inventory of Your Classroom
2. Right Down to the “Core”: Establishing Classroom Procedures
3. Straining the “Pulp” Out of Student Misbehavior: Programming Students to Behave Your Way
4. “Leafing” Through the Center and Bulletin Board Maze: Putting Centers to Work
5. “Stemming” Out to Parents: Communicating Classroom Expectations, Grades, and More
6. Teaching Techniques that “Appeel” to Every Learner
7. Getting to the “Skinny” of the Matter: Timesaving Organizational and Cleaning Tips
8. The “Pie” of My Eye: Great Tips for Teachers
